Hotlink is a technique of building a website based on resources belonging to other websites. We are talking about media files, graphic files, archive files that take up bandwidth and server space. This technique is considered unethical by most Internet users and is combated by the authors of the source addresses.
When enabling hotlink protection, you need to specify the list of domains for which protection will not be applied (domains allowed by Hotlink), i.e. the list of allowed domains.
Hotlink protection prevents your images from being used by other sites. This can reduce the bandwidth used by the origin server. When we receive a photo request for your site, we check that it’s not from users on another site. People visiting your domain will still be able to download and view images. Hotlink protection does not affect indexing but prevents images from appearing on sites such as Google images, Pinterest, etc. You can allow hotlinks by placing them in a directory called hotlink-ok. The hotlink-ok catalog can be placed anywhere on your website.
